KINGDOM COME - RSC
A fever dream
‘Gemma Brockis and Wendy Hubbard’s ambitious production for the RSC unfolds like a series of old masters.’
THE GUARDIAN - FULL REVIEW
‘Bold, brilliant work. An almost orgiastic visual experience.’
THE STAGE
The English Civil War.
A time of iconoclasm.
We beheaded the king. Publicly. We became a republic. We smashed up the Cathedrals. And whipped statues. And baptised horses. And shut down the theatres. The most famous theatre deaigner of the day was dragged out of his house in a blanket. What became of him?
The Kingdoms of England, Ireland and Scotland were thrown into utter chaos by the bloodiest wars these lands have ever known. Pretending became a crime.
The Roundheads.
The Cavaliers.
A war of wigs.

The show began in a court masque, taken from the script of the last masque performed before war. The audience travelled through the Baroque Proscenium and out into the dock. After travelling through teh backstage, they finally found their way back into the auditorium, where the pros was now completely stripped of all gold and statuary. With one flood and minimall costume, we zoomed into a fragmented vision of a day in April in 1652 in cheapside.
